interpret CJ hendry’s hand drawn inkblots in her bouncy house asylum: RORSCHACH

gleefully, CJ hendry found a way around her boredom with realism — all she needed was a bouncy house, some horror movie references and the unstable minds of her viewers. RORSCHACH, CJ’s 6th solo exhibition, invites you to be one of those unstable minds. bounce in her house of existential horrors and nostalgic joys. interpret her meticulously hand drawn inkblots with childlike wonder and fearful uncertainty.

CJ hendry’s RORSCHACH opens its plushy, claustrophobic doors from april 10 – april 21, 2019, in dumbo, brooklyn. inside, 3,000 square feet of all-white cushions can transport up to 100 guests at a time to a headspace that walks a fine line between bouncy nostalgia and insanity.

american psycho

each hyperrealistic drawing is titled from a horror movie. above, american psycho, stares back at us in pinks and blues that seem to rise and slide and drip off the page. we might not see norman bates or christian bale or dorsia in this inkblot. in fact, we will most likely all see something slightly different, but for a mechanical draftsman like CJ, the psychological subject matter was perfect for stirring up her boredom with realism.

‘for a long time, I have been bored with realism, its painfully obvious and rigid, the viewer is given no room for interpretation. these squish paintings are unpredictable and unadulterated. of course, there is mechanical draftsmanship in the execution of my drawings but when you step back and look at the final result there is no clear answer, people will see something different every time,’ says CJ hendry of her latest exhibition.
