california-based design student farnoosh rafaie has developed the interactive lighting implement, ‘color code’. the individual engaging with the lamp may generate a trigger and sequential memory system for the woven light cylinder. he or she does this by introducing a combination of colors activated by a pump system which runs the dye through the object’s transparent tubing and into two separate containers outside near the lamp. first, the initial color traces the plastic netting as the light of the furniture piece is enhanced by its containing shade. once the first color sequence has completed its round, a secondary shade is introduced to the work. this following color wipes away the first dye, returning previously displayed liquid to its holding container nearby the netted lamp. the two colors alternate, pulsing through the transparent tubing of the cylindrical floor lamp until the two shades become one combined pigment.

‘the completed mechanism exhibits the fleeting temperament of remembrance. as the dye runs through the fixture, it is the distinct and unaffected singular facet of recollection; though as color code recycles the sourced dye, it manifests as the indistinguishable and muddled formation of memory.’ – farnoosh rafaie
