in the polish city of łódź, artist crystal wagner has wrapped an art nouveau building in an organic growth made from wire, nylon, and cable ties. ‘hyperbolic’ is a site-specific public installation that responds to the city’s urban landscape. the large-scale work snakes around the corner façade, wrapping around windows, between balconies, and around architectural ornamentation, enveloping the site in a sheath of pink, purple and blue plastic.

created for uniqa art lodz, curated by michal biezynski, ‘hyperbolic’ forms a wild exterior growth that travels across the art nouveau façade of the 100 year old building. ‘I am interested in the dialog between architecture and organic forms/structures found in nature,’ wagner says. the artist’s fascination in the blend of 2 and 3-dimensional forms, the use of unconventional materials, and the making of massive, site-specific works transforms the cityscape into an engaging creative space for locals and visitors alike.

‘wagner is taking over space,’ curator biezynski describes. ‘while she’s working in galleries, she’s transforming its interiors into unreal, multicolor ‘worlds’ like from outer space. her outdoor realizations create the impression of ‘devouring’ different elements of architecture and street infrastructure. wagner is usually using everyday textiles and synthetic materials to create her amorphous, organic structures.’
