damien hirst statue proposed as angel of the west in ilfracombe

‘verity’ by damien hirst has been proposed for installation along the coast of ilfracombe, england

the towering statue ‘verity’ has just been revealed by british artist damien hirst, alongside his proposal that the sculpture be installed as an ‘angel of the west’ in the town of ilfracombe along the devon coast of southwest england.

with an internal frame of stainless steel, the bronze-finished figure is of a pregnant women standing atop a plinth of books, holding a glass-fiber sword above her head with her left hand and a set of scales behind her back as she gazes out seaward. the work, called in the ilfracombe application ‘a monumental modern allegory of truth and justice’, is thought to be the most recent piece in hirst’s ‘virgin mother’ series.

at 20.25 meters (66 feet, four inches) in height, ‘verity’ stands ten inches taller than antony gormley’s ‘angel of the north’, erected in 1998 in gateshead, northeast england. hirst has promised town councilmen that they can have ‘verity’– which currently exists in three sections– on a loan of 20 years if they grant him the necessary planning permission. already drawing controversy because of the high teen pregnancy rate in ilfracombe, the statue would be placed along the edge of the harbor and bordered by a parking lot, about 100 yards away from damien hirst’s local restaurant 11 the quay.

ilfracombe officials are expected to make a decision about the sculpture in september, and ‘verity’ could be installed by the end of the year.

additional perspectives

  • Wow. Verity. I am sure many interpretations can be made of this, but I see a hungry Brittania, looking westward, ready to give birth to a colonialist/imperialist empire, all the while wiping her arse with the scales of justice that should have been afforded indigenous populations. Verity…

    Steven Newton, Ohio, USA says:
  • @steven: you meant “angry” Britannia?

UK has ALREADY given birth to a colonialist/imperialist empire 250 years ago dear steven u should know
u’re living in it…:-). we all do actually. let’s call it pax americana, just like there has been a pax romana. empires indeed…
that said, i agree with u, the statue is somehow a bit “warlike”. a fecund valkyrie maybe looking westward but moreover looking backward.
a womb and a sword altogether is not exactly a peaceful image.

    buzzoff says:
  • Is she supposed to be wiping her arse with the scales of justice?
    Is Damien Hirst a wanker?

    Alex Bland says:
  • arrg

    max says:
  • I suspect the scales are there for modesty, given the viewing angle from the quay.
Otherwise, you’d have the Angel of the North versus the Arsehole of the South.
Not that this should be taken as a precise summary of the North/South divide – You can’t empirical about these things. (That pun’s for you buzzoff)

    TheCat says:
  • nice tits

    (somebody had to say it)

    unpol says:
  • I find this nauseous. Unlike the Angel of the north. As an artist my gut feeling says wrong place wrong time. Out of place and may well pick up traits of the area. But Ilfracome shouldn\’t be saddled with something like this. Mr Hurst I think may have got it wrong

    Ashley Jennings says:
  • A car park is not the right place for this piece of sulpture. A headland maybe.

    fanosculpture says:
  • Is it meant to be comment on the state of justice in this land!

    Dusty says:
  • Car park is a most fitting place for this piece. Who’s conning who … and who’s being conned?

    Son of Ben says:
  • I think shes beautiful as is her context

    Verity Saunders Ducos says:
  • The female body is beautiful, but I for one do not really want to be looking at a giant pregnant one. Not sure that a car park is really a suitable location either.

    ian buckingham says:
  • damage hirst

    oliver p. says:
  • A strong siren image as entrance to the harbour, Perfectly porportioned but is she of indonesian or amazonian descent. Big feet, so obviously amazon. We need acceaa to be able to touch her to mak ea connection.
You MUST visit to see her.
