with a career spanning over 50 years, daniel buren is no stranger to exhibiting his masterful works at the bortolami gallery. between may 12th and june 24th 2017, buren will showcase his latest ‘in situ’ project in bortolami’s new tribeca location. the artist is best known for his use of contrasting stripes as a visual tool that reveals the specific features and dimensions of a site, often transforming the environment for which it was specifically designed.

by modifying the navigation of space, enhancing lighting, obstructing viewpoints, and highlighting certain architectural features within the bortolami gallery, daniel buren alters the perception and contexts of the viewer’s surrounding. literally, ‘in situ’ describes an object that is ‘in its original place’ — that being said, buren’s ‘in situ’ exhibition ‘denotes a work made for a particular site, for a particular time and exhibited in this particular site, and therefore not transportable to another place.’

buren’s charactarizing use of alternating white and colored stripes measure 8.7 cm in width, as derived from the fabric he first used as a canvas in 1965. he uses it as a standard or unit of measure of formal properties, and serves as a constant within all of the designer’s works in order to highlight the juxtaposition presented.
