daniel buren: like child’s play, work in situ
the strasbourg modern and contemporary art museum, france
june 14th, 2014 through january 4, 2015
daniel buren has created two site-specific installations that unite the existing architecture of france’s strasbourg modern and contemporary art museum with his distinctive ‘on site’ colored environments he has been using since 1968. ‘like child’s play, work in situ’ is deployed over the MAMCS’ glazed façade and within the temporary exhibition space. chromatic values are applied onto tinted film and affixed directly to the glass canopy and the 25 meter high windows lining the ‘nave’. the result achieves a striking stained glass effect which radically alters the museum’s iconic façade from both the inside and the outside. reflections cast through the glass fall into the interior space, projecting vibrant tones on the walls, ceilings and floors, fully immersing the visitor in a radiant and kaleidoscopic glow.

within the exhibition space, buren has built an architectural landscape with a hundred painted wooden components. the geometrically shaped modules are arranged symmetrically in the room, forming a sort of giant construction game.
