the british music legend wasn’t much of a londoner — it was the skylines and subways of new york city that sparked a sense of home in david bowie’s asymmetric eyes. now, spotify is reflecting that spark back at the new york city subway commuters, traveling through the broadway-lafayette station from tuesday, april 17 until sunday, may 13.

the city that shaped bowie, is now showcasing how bowie shaped it. the immersive subway takeover explores the icon’s influence on music, fashion, and art.
even the infamous new york city MTA metrocards will be touched by bowie’s flare for theatrics. commuters may ponder ‘life on mars’ as they find that, in this station, the usual MTA card graphics have been replaced by one of bowie’s smug personas, ziggy stardust, aladdin sane, and more. visitors can add to the underground bowie universe by contributing to the hashtag: #DavidBowieIsHere.
‘david bowie is’ — organized by the victoria and albert museum, london — has been up since march at the brooklyn museum and honors bowie’s life, art, and work. but now, in a larger-than-life way, spotify is taking the art installation outside the confines of museum walls, where it may be appreciated unexpectedly by all.
inside the station, visitors will encounter wall-sized images of bowie-inspired art. each piece will be paired with one of the artist’s quotes that speaks to his electric relationship with new york, completed with a spotify code that will add to the underground, multi sensory experience.
