new york’s friedrich petzel gallery is currently showing the third solo show by german artist dirk skreber. the show consists of skreber’s new ‘pluck’ paintings and two life-size sculptures of crashed cars. skreber has consistently dealt with catastrophe in his work, mining the subject for its energy and unpredictable nature. this show continues in this area with the ‘pluck’ series representing portraits of over-sexualized comic character obscured through a ‘foam and tape method to achieve an optical gradation’. however the shows main feature is two life size crashed cars. both vehicles are entwined around poles and mysteriously clean despite their horrific crumpled appearance. although born in germany, skreber now lives and works in new york.
