mixed-media artist doug aitken from california has conceived ‘fountain (earth fountain)’, a tabletop sculpture at the artist’s booth for his installation for zurich’s galerie eva presenhuber at art basel 2012. letters spelling the word ‘art’ are the base of a cascading thick liquid, resembling either chocolate or a kind of earthly sludge by most gallerygoers’ estimation. the piece is made from acrylic glass, metal, colored methyl cellulose and is controlled by a pumping system for the bubbling and sliding of the liquid.
