encased in several heavy layers of translucent glass sheets, human silhouettes made from hundreds of individual mixed-media are suspended in a crystal-clear mass. the series of sculptures that make up ‘psychogeographies’ are intricately crafted by brooklyn-based artist dustin yellin, who works with an expansive range of mediums, techniques and tools in the manifestation of his life-sized works. a complex mesh of colored paper clippings encompassing portraits, botanicals and pop culture motifs swarm into a floating arrangement that outline a corporal form, as the three-dimensional thickness they compose overlap throughout the transparent slab. inspired by the two thousand year old qin army of terra-cotta warriors, the sculptural forms growing from entangled specimens encompass both the fantastic and dystopic, and disappear and distorts depending on the viewer’s position. yellin is currently exhibiting works from the ‘psychogeographies’ at richard heller gallery, santa monica until march 29th, 2014.
