eyewriter is a low cost apparatus that using eye-tracking to enable people to draw using only their eyes. the project began when well-known graffiti artist tony quan was diagnosed with als in 2003, leaving him paralyzed everywhere except his eyes. members of free art and technology (fat), openframeworks, the graffiti research lab and the ebeling group then got together to try and build a system that would allow quan and other als patients to draw using their eyes. the team is keeping the project as low-cost as possible in addition to making open source for others to benefit from their work. as a of now quan is able to draw by moving his eyes in front of a eye-tracking camera connected to a computer. his drawings can then be projected onto surfaces, giving the effect of graffiti in a completely new way.
