faig ahmed, an artist living and working in baku, azerbaijan, is known for his conceptual works that blend traditional decorative craft with the visual language of carpets to create sculptural works of art. throughout his practice, he reimagines ancient crafts to form new visual boundaries by deconstructing traditions and stereotypes.

ahmed has recently revealed a finished artwork whose progress was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, fittingly titled ‘doubts’. ‘we started the production of this work a month before the whole world plunged into doubts about the future due to the current situation caused by the pandemic,’ the artist says. ‘because of the quarantine we had to close our textile studio several times and the artwork on the loom was waiting for its time. a few days ago, after seven months, ‘doubts?’ was cut off the loom.’

the sculptural artwork by faig ahmed takes the form of an oversized carpet that extends beyond the boundaries of its rectangular form and drips in a large swirl of colors and geometries onto the floor. with its pattern and composition seemingly melting into the ground, the artwork deconstructs traditional ancient crafts to create a new visual vocabulary. ‘there are no more doubts in this carpet,’ the artist continues. ‘destroying the geometric intelligible boundaries of the patterns — overflowing they geal on the floor — this is the limit of doubts.’
