felipe pantone has created a kinetic sculpture that uses rotating acrylic disks to create an ever-changing palette of color. the edition is part of pantone’s ‘subtractive variability’ series that work as a platform to demonstrate chromatic phenomena.

titled ‘subtractive variability auto’, the moving sculpture combines three printed discs that sit upon a clear plexiglass base. inside of the base is a mechanism which turns each disc. together they create unexpected color formations, the various hues of each peace mixing with another and reflecting the surrounding light.

‘collaborating with argentinian-spanish artist felipe pantone means venturing into new and uncharted territory,’ explains case studyo, the contemporary art platform that worked with pantone on the piece. ‘in the works of pantone everything is vibration in constant movement, a perpetual flow of active and reactive energy.’

‘the theory of ‘liquid modernity’ lies at the base of his artistic practice. his work internalises the notion that change is the only permanence and uncertainty is the only certainty.’

‘encapsulating these ideas in a collaborative project meant abandoning traditional techniques and exploring new materials resulting in the creation of a dynamic art object; a kinetic sculpture.’

the edition size is 100 with 10 artist proofs. each piece arrives inside a custom screen-printed box, signed, numbered, and with a certificate of authority.

spanning sculpture, graffiti, paintings, and large-scale installations, his body of work is reminiscent of italian futurism in the way that they exalt the modern world. a diverse series of vivid artworks boast his signature motifs including computer glitches, 8-bit gradients and pixelated abstractions.

‘the sleek mechanics in motion capture the surrounding light making the edition produce striking and perpetually evolving results, encouraging the viewer to embrace change and find beauty in evolution,’ casestudyo adds.
