getty museum asks people in self-isolation to recreate classic artworks

the getty museum in los angeles is challenging people to recreate their favorite artworks using themselves as the subjects and household objects as their props. currently closed to the public as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, the art museum started the initiative as a way of keeping their community engaged as they self-isolate.

getty posted the challenge to its twitter account on wednesday, asking people to get creative during their time using just three things lying around the house. since then, the museum’s social media has been flooded with responses ranging from impressive re-creations of classics including master of saint cecilia’s madonna and child, the anonymously created virgin, saint elizabeth, and the infants john the baptist and christ.

one twitter user recreated monet’s ‘camille with a small dog,’ wearing clothing similar and style and their own dog. meanwhile, another person recreated the painting, ‘still life with fish, vegetables, gougères, pots, and cruets on a table,’ by french artist jean-siméon chardin.

‘our audience told us loud and clear that they wanted to see beautiful artworks, learn more about art from home, and find delight on social media,’ sarah waldorf, the museum’s social media lead, said in an interview with yahoo lifestyle. ‘we wanted to offer up a creative challenge to find refuge from the uncertain state of the world and to spark excitement to get creative — no extra materials required.’

  • The same initiative is in The Netherlands. Anneloes Officier has introduced it and made a Instagram account for it. I don’t know who was first but it would at least be nice if this was mentioned so the pictures people make would be shared with the same hashtag #tussenkunstenquarantaine
