new york based design collective vault 49 used over 25,000 electronic cigarette pods in the recreation of a massive golden gate bridge vista. in conjunction with a series of campaigns for ploom, a brand of electronic cigarettes, the designers wanted to create an art piece that would draw on the brand’s san francisco roots, reinforcing its creative clout.

the team of designers came up a numerical system to allocate where the colored pods would be placed, then individually fixed and glued each one onto the sticky surface. when viewed close-up, the vibrant pods are singular elements, as if digitally pixelated — but from a distance, the overall chroma creates a massive landscaped image of the golden gate bridge. the finished artwork travels the world to accompany ploom parties and events.
