horror props creator ashley newman and US baker andrew fuller put a new twist on the gruesome tale of sweeny todd, the victorian barber who turned his murdered victims into pies. it all started with newman’s designs of inedible pies in the shape of baked human faces made out of latex, of which fuller received tons of requests before deciding to try his own hand at it, this time using edible, delicious ingredients. the cake artist has now developed a whole preparation strategy to make sure his dishes don’t come out swollen and warped after baking.

newman, the initiator of the zombie-like face pot pies, achieves the realistic look by stretching the skin-tone latex on a foam base and decorating it with tongues and crooked teeth. although fuller’s pieces are a little less authentic-looking, they feature more murder traces, for example, seams on the forehead and blood coming out of the mouth and eyes. ‘I had fun playing with textures, scars, warts, coloring, and YES, even EDIBLE gnarly, bloody clumps of hair,‘ mentions the cake artist of his first attempt at making the pie, which has a flavor of mint cherry.

whatever you think, both artists’ works are meant to make us unwilling to kill people. ‘listen, don’t kill people, I don’t condone it,’ says andrew fuller. ‘it’s grotesque yes, but also completely ridiculous,’ adds ashley newman. ‘you see it and you think, “why would someone do this?” – that makes you laugh and starts you thinking.’
