for her latest work, artist karolina halatek envisions an immersive light installation titled ‘halo’. currently on display in chengdu’s A4 art museum in china until september 30th 2019, the project focuses on ideas of ‘clarity, light and extended space’. designed to provide an intimate, personal experience, the illuminated ring circles viewers in pure white light in an effort to provoke contemplation within an abstract environment.

the name and the form of the work makes reference to the rare optical phenomena seen around the sun or moon, produced by light in the interaction of ice crystals. in the exhibition, halatek offers the place of the celestial body to the art viewer, who becomes a central part of the piece. connotations of religion and prayer are also present in the work, as the intimate nature of the installation provides a space for quiet introspection. in essence, halo concerns the human being and the inner light that every man has the potential to discover.

born in poland, karolina halatek has studied in london, berlin and warsaw. using light as the central medium in her work, the artist creates experiential site-specific spaces that incorporate visual, architectural and sculptural elements. seeing her work primarily as a catalyst for experience, halatek creates installations that have strong experiential and immersive characteristics. as part of the ARIE A4 international artists’ residency program, halo is on display in the A4 art museum in chengdu from august 17th until september 30th 2019.
