developed as a multimedia collaboration between new york-based sculptor nathan sawaya and australian photographer dean west, ‘in pieces’ is a series of illustrated compositions based on ideas about nature, culture, society and identity. the images have been constructed using modern photography techniques, combined with specially sculpted LEGO objects placed within the scenes. the combination accentuates the scenario aesthetic, compelling the viewer to deconstruct each tableau – exposing elements of the architecture of cultural identity within itself.

the images depict various individuals standing in empty minimalist scenes with geometrical designs, drawing reference from common features of american landscapes. influenced by the visual compositions of the american postcard in both the style and content – the series has been color graded with pastels such as warm yellows and pale blues. brick by brick, the layer-by-layer approach represents the direct processes involved with digital photography – contrasting pixelation and technology.
