inclume lights up lincoln cathedral with playful ‘stellar’ installation
the small sculpture is illuminating dark evenings with a spectacle of patterns and light.
in the english city of lincoln, inclume has illuminated dark evenings with this light installation called ‘stellar’. the work takes place around lincoln cathedral, where a perforated box creates a spectacle of patterns for passersby to discover.

when the sun sets and darkness falls, stellar unleashes its light and consumes the space it fills. passersby are enticed to investigate its source, leading them to discover hidden and otherwise unlit spaces around the cathedral. the array of patterns created by stellar’s projections onto the cathedral adds a novel experience to the building after dark.

the projections of diffused light evoke comparisons with the night sky, creating an interesting contrast with the manmade, hard-edged form of the box. as people move around the sculpture, the shadows transform, creating a playful and joyous interaction in an artificial ‘enclosure’. when interacting with the sculpture, inclume hopes that viewers can be transported on a journey that feels otherworldly.
