‘LOOK AT MY BAG!’ by instant hutong is an interactive project designed for beijingONE arts festival 2014, where people are invited to take an image depicting a typical element of old beijing’s architecture and walk along the hutong alleys carrying it over their shoulder. more specifically, the selected images can symbolize the map of a neighborhood, the plan of a single house, a piece of furniture, or a a decorative detail taken from a wall.

the drawings are presented in a technical manner: black wireframe lines on a white background. they have been zoomed in or out of their original scale, printed on rigid board and thus transformed into accessories to wear with the help of bands, straps and handles, as if they are pieces of fashion. exhibition visitors are encouraged to take some of these ‘architectural accessories’, place them on their bodies, and explore the city to show and to be shown.

info points with information about the installation will be organized in three locations around guozijian. these kiosks will work as an exchange station where participants may take and return items. between these occasions, each visitor will be actively responsible for his or her picture of beijing’s cultural history.

the studio has a firm belief in the philosophy of the work: ‘thanks the interaction with beijingONE visitors, for a time of two weeks the wearable images of ‘LOOK AT MY BAG!’ will create a moving and ever-changing street exhibition. the project plays with the fact that under the guise of revitalization these neighborhoods have been often overturned, used and thrown away like a dress to change, while what is needed is a greater commitment from everyone in understanding and showing them as the best parts of our city.’
