something between a dream and reality

south korean multidisciplinary artist jeeyoung lee introduces her new photography series dubbed ‘into the mist’. the artist creates surreal scenes converting her tiny studio into different universes. fusing various media of sculpture, painting, installation, and performance, she forms the space and then captures it, creating unconventional worlds.

following a completely contradictory approach comparable to her previous descriptive works, now she shifts to abstraction techniques. devoid of accessories and props, she invites the audience to get immersed into a palette of pastel nuances while leaving the outline of her body barely perceptible. jeeyoung lee's 'into the mist' series immerses viewers into a palette of pastel nuancesall images courtesy of echo fine arts

a paradoxical scene

combining three elements —light, her body, and fog— she forms a paradoxical scene where fullness and emptiness coexist. the artist calls the viewers to place themselves into the room, creating their very own narrative. something between a dream and reality, experiencing uncertainty and hopelessness, viewers forced to face their insecurities and loneliness and survive in an ever-changing era.

a visible, almost tangible emotion

inspired by a foggy day spent snowboarding, ‘into the mist’ is a (re)collection of sensations and memories. ‘I was out on the slopes before dawn when it was still pitch black. a thick fog had settled on the mountainside. I was surrounded by what seemed like an opaque white wall as soon as I glided into the fog, shared the artist. ‘I was surrounded by others, yet I was on a path of my own. my eyes were open but there was nothing in sight I could only feel the presence of others by sound.’

‘it was a moment of true solitude and an unexpected gift from nature. my senses were awake and acutely aware of its surroundings. I was meditating. my emotions swung between fear and relief. I wanted to capture this moment of self-discovery and expand upon this subject in a series.’
