JEFF KOONS PUTS BALLOON DOG ON THE WRIST

Hublot and Jeff Koons unveil four watches across two new models: the Classic Fusion Balloon Dog by Jeff Koons and the MP-14 Origin by Jeff Koons. Unveiled in New York on September 16, 2026, the collaboration moves between two familiar threads in the American artist’s work: turning ordinary objects into immaculate, oversized icons, and using reflection to make the viewer part of the object. One watch shrinks his most recognizable balloon animal into 42 millimeters; the other attempts something only slightly more ambitious — fitting the birth of the universe into 44.

The Classic Fusion Balloon Dog draws directly from Koons’ Balloon Dog works, produced between 1994 and 2000 as part of his Celebration series. Hublot reworks its Classic Fusion in three versions — mirror-polished stainless steel, blue anodized aluminum and red anodized aluminum — each limited to 200 pieces. Rather than reproducing the sculpture as a graphic motif, the watch borrows its puffed-up geometry: the case, bezel, dial, indexes and even parts of the clasp appear rounded as though pressure were building somewhere underneath.

THE CLASSIC FUSION TAKES A DEEP BREATH

The illusion continues in the details. A rubber element at 10:30 mimics the tail of a balloon dog, while the crown is shaped like an inflation valve and the seconds hand carries a miniature Balloon Dog counterweight. Domed indexes contain three-dimensional white Super-LumiNova, Koons’ signature sits at six o’clock, and padded metallic inserts extend the inflated effect into the strap. The result manages to make a mechanical watch look unexpectedly soft — although, thankfully, no pump is required.

Inside, the motif does not entirely disappear. The HUB1710 self-winding movement receives a customized oscillating weight shaped with the same rounded language as the exterior and delivers approximately 50 hours of power reserve. The three watches are water-resistant to 50 meters and topped with anti-reflective sapphire crystal. What could easily have remained a Balloon Dog printed onto a dial instead becomes a fairly thorough reconstruction of the Classic Fusion around Koons’ vocabulary of volume, polish and controlled excess.

THE MP-14 STARTS WITH A BIG BANG

If the Balloon Dog stays close to Koons’ most recognizable imagery, the MP-14 Origin by Jeff Koons heads somewhere less literal. The 44 mm watch takes the creation and expansion of the cosmos as its starting point, enclosing its mechanics within an octagonal box of transparent sapphire that requires around 534 hours of machining, paired with titanium components. Inside, concentric white-gold rings set with baguette-cut diamonds and blue sapphires form orbital layers around a translucent blue sapphire dome inspired by Koons’ Gazing Ball series. Two suspended rotating rings indicate the hours and minutes, while the four rings carry 202 stones totaling approximately 2.6 carats.

At its center sits Hublot’s first automatic central tourbillon, powered by the manufacture HUB9014 movement. Its 594 components, peripheral oscillating weight and 60-hour power reserve allow the mechanism to remain visually open, with the tourbillon suspended beneath the blue dome like the first moving point in an expanding system. Even the usual crown has effectively vanished: separate concealed mechanisms handle winding and time-setting without interrupting the sapphire architecture. Limited to 30 pieces, the MP-14 takes its number from 14th Street in New York, where the New Museum was located when Koons held his first solo exhibition there in 1980 — coincidentally also the year Hublot was founded. Apparently even cosmic time likes a neat origin story.
