‘jo started the journal because she wanted to record the things she was discovering, as she found them, because nature is one of the most important things in her life. it’s consistent, it’s ubiquitous, it never lets her down, and it’s all free,’ reads jo brown’s webpage. ‘the nature journal is an illustrated memory of her discoveries in the order she finds them. everything jo has drawn in her journal was here long before we were and will be here long after we’ve all gone. many of the pages depict things that she has found in her own garden: the nature in her journal is nature that anyone can find. all that’s required is a little patience and quiet observation.’

made with ballpoint pens and colors, each drawing takes brown between six and ten hours. the journal, which has been immortalized in a new book called ‘secrets of a devon wood my nature journal’ recounts, like a scientific paper, with full detail every species and moment when it was spotted. from the date, to the weather and exact location, each page is filled from top to bottom with breath taking and informative illustrations.
