‘oxbow archive’ by joel sternfeld

luhring augustine gallery, new york september 6 – october 4, 2008

photographer joel sternfeld chronicles the weather and atmospheric effects in a field in central massachusetts in his new series ‘oxbow archive’. through fifteen large scale works, sternfeld tracks the environmental changes through the seasons. sternfeld departs from stereotypical landscape photography by avoiding the spectacular and focusing on the average and normal aspects of nature through the seasons. deeper reading into the works reveals a hint of irony, as sternfeld is perhaps signaling that the seasons will never be the same due to the effects of global warming.
