digital artist ken kelleher presents an extensive series of digital sculptures rendered in courtyards, galleries, and streetscapes worldwide. through the iterative process of designing speculative works of physical sculpture, kelleher had refined his digital rendering techniques and representational language. ultimately, the series of renderings became a comprehensive project in itself. through his processes, kelleher investigates the meaning of sculpture, and the meaning of an object that exists without utilitarian value. kelleher elaborates: ‘sculpture, for me, is an inquiry into the deep mysterious nature of things.

through this sculptural investigation, ken kelleher has developed an accumulative process of form-making. beginning with basic, elemental shapes, kelleher uses techniques of inflating, duplicating, and nesting to develop compositions which seem soft and bloated, and often tenuous. the volume of work produced through the investigation shows variety in subtle moves. kelleher illustrates: ‘once I’m done with one piece I usually have ideas for several others. the amount of variety that can be produced by moving one or two shapes through space is amazing.

while variety in composition and form is evident, kelleher further experiments with material and color. digital rendering techniques offer endless iterative opportunities. multiple shifts in material, especially when applied to a singular form, allow for a variety of interpretations. kelleher explains: ‘the visual expression I try to achieve is one that is open to interpretation. in one piece someone may see something playful, or whimsical, in another it may feel menacing.’ kelleher is currently working with art in public spaces to develop a series of pieces for a new public art master plan for a new city in kuwait — sabah al ahmad.
