koji kasatani creates ongoing series of ultra-realistic banana ceramics

inspired by the colors and scenes of everyday life, japanese artist and sculptor koji kasatani’s creates light-hearted ceramics that take joking around seriously. following the tradition of creatives whose practice relies on incredible craftsmanship he pushes ceramics to its limits, focusing on the most minute details to create true-to-life depictions of everyday objects.

kasatani re-creates everything from rusted iron pipes, garbage, worn-out shoes, used books, and cardboard boxes. his most iconic pieces however are his banana-inspired sculptures, a series of busts and other compositions made up of ‘bananas’ in various states.

he graduated from accademia d’arte in florence, italy, back in 2007, where he developed a love of classic, natural, and lasting materials. pairing this with the common items that make up his subjects, there is a pop-art-kind-of-quality to his work, reminiscent of andy warhol’s use of the banana motifs in the 1960s. the sculptures reflect kasatani’s belief that humour is the essence of art, acting as a bridge between the art world and the uninitiated.
