kristina lechner cooks up domestic-object dishes from household products

using ordinary household objects from rubber bands and rope, to shoelaces and sponges, graphic designer kristina lechner has created the ongoing series ‘food not food’. lechner has transformed these mundane items into miniature meals and edible arrangements, recontextualizing their use as a playful creative medium. ‘I have never been able to cook,’ lechner says, ‘but food art has always intrigued me. at first glance, these photos look like real food, but up close their actual ingredients are revealed.’

everyday items take on new personalities — shoelaces are turned into a bowl of fettuccine; a bath sponge becomes a beer; match sticks appear as greasy french fries; and Q-tips are pictured as cauliflower. while these clever mashups can’t be consumed, lechner‘s domestic-object dishes and mundane-item meals make household products look tastier than ever before. follow the ongoing project on the designer’s instagram here
