‘adriana’ by lee gainer, 2010 (inkjet print on photo paper)

frankenlovely is a new photo collage series by artist lee gainer. the series features different female faces that are made from fashion magazine photos spliced together to create entirely new faces. these faces combine different facial features from different images, like cut and paste frankensteins. the series aims to investigate the modern obsession with celebrity images. each work is set on a blank background, isolating the faces form their normal context. print editions are limited to 7 prints per image plus 2 artist proofs. they are printed using pigmented inks on 16 x 16 inch photo paper on an inkjet printer. gainer describes the background on the series.the models displayed on the covers of women’s fashion magazines are presented as the epitome of modern beauty. some women attempt to emulate the attributes of these cover models by using various products and even through surgical means. it is not unusual for a woman to request the hairstyle of this singer from their stylist or even the lips or nose of that actress from their surgeon. if we can pick and choose specific features and re-combine them as we please, is beauty simply a collaboration of features? is loveliness merely a sum of our parts?
