mexican self-taught artist bosco sodi will be showing his signature fissured, velvetised and heavily encrusted paintings at the institut valencia d’art modern (IVAM) from may 14 through july 6, 2013. sodi uses a mixture of pure pigment, sawdust, wood pulp, natural fibers, water, and glue to create a textured surface that dries into a monochromatic primordial landscape. sodi explores the volume of color – from deep pink and blue saturations through to fiery reds – the terrestrial surface of each artwork is built up by hand over the course of one or two days.

this is a demanding physical process that sodi dubs as ‘a continuous action, like a performance’. each piece’s process is influenced by factors beyond his control – including climate, altitude, and water density, which vary depending on whether sodi creates the works in his new york, berlin, barcelona, or mexico city studios. sodi’s artworks are part art and part science, an approach influenced by his chemical engineer father  – whose home experiments often ‘exploded’ – and his mother’s love of art. sodi has also informed his work on that of the french painter jean dubuffet who coined the term ‘art brut’  – meaning ‘raw art’, an expression that articulates sodi’s approach in a very holistic way.
