in ‘manner’, marie sloth rousing challenges our perception of how we eat together

performed on march 17th, 2022, at the iconic window store of nørgaard på strøget in central copenhagen, ‘manner’ is an unusual act put together by designer marie sloth rousing. it tells the story of how traces are made from the movements of our hands, while challenging our understanding of the meal and the way we eat together.

from dining to spilling: an ever-changing installation

‘manner’ by sloth rousing (see more here) is centered around six guests sitting at a dinner table, wearing white shirts connected to a tablecloth, ultimately creating one piece of textile that becomes the turning point of the performance.

the act begins with food casually being served during what seems to be a conventional gathering. however, while performers consume the carefully curated courses, they begin spilling and staining the installation, turning the tablecloth into a colorful canvas evoking rousing’s first clothing line; models serving the table were also wearing her collection.

by interacting with the ever-changing installation, the performers created a continuous balance between the fashion pieces worn on the body, and the table explored through the ‘manner’ performance. sloth rousing collaborated with textile designer anna clarisse holck wæhrens to create the one-piece cloth.
