karin weber gallery in hong kong is presenting works of japanese painters masato shigemori and naoto tanno in the exhibition, ‘ever-lasting nature, ever-changing cities’. despite being raised in the same country and generation, the two artists have developed contrasting aesthetics, which serve to depict differences between human interactions with urban and natural environments.

while plants and flowers appear vulnerable and frail, the power of nature is far beyond what people can even begin to imagine, as evidenced by japan’s unprecedented natural disasters in march 2011. this is conveyed in shigemori’s colorful narrative works, whereas the delicate intricacy of cities are rendered in tanno’s minimalist, geometric compositions.
