‘infiniti 2011’ concept still by m.a.s.h., a shortlisted entry in the infiniti digital art competition

car and driver unite in the installation ‘infiniti 2011’, in which the speed of animated visuals is controlled as users step on the gas and throttle paddles of a showroom vehicle. the piece was created by lebanese design studio m.a.s.h. (alaa farhat, sara makki, mark eid, and hilal chehabeddine) for designboom’s ‘infiniti digital art competition‘, which asked participants to design innovative or interactive digital artworks under the theme of ‘inspired performance’, for installation in new centers that infiniti is opening throughout europe.

the video visualization illustrates the history of almost all infiniti cars from the company’s inception in 1989 through 2011. the animation style of each car is related on its place within the progression, as the visual breaks apart into individual components that are then ‘re-formed’ into another model. the pace and progression of the animation is linked directly to the engine revolutions of a showroom car. users step on the gas pedal and control the throttle paddles to affect the engine revolutions.

data input for the project is obtained from an existent sensor on the crankshaft of vehicles, which ordinarily sends data to the dashboard or engine control unit.
