a 10x10x10 aluminum structure supports the woven ‘rainbow cube’ by installation-artist and sculptor megan geckler. intertwining the form are thousands of strands of florescent flagging tape — geckler’s signature material — in a spectrum of colors including pink, blue, yellow, green, and silver.

when viewed from the exterior, the cube’s frenetic pattern resembles an extreme photographic closeup. enlarged to the point of recognition, individual pixels evolve from mere blips to distinguishable blocks of color. inside, the experience is completely different. backlit from outside, the translucent flagging tape takes on an ethereal quality. overlaid bands combine, creating vivid fields of violet, cyan, and ochre.

‘rainbow cube’ by megan geckler, was supported by a grant from the LA department of cultural affairs. it is currently on display at the los angeles municipal art gallery at barnsdall park, 4800 hollywood boulevard, until july 3rd, 2016.
