michael strevens manipulates architectural shots into abstract patterns

london-based digital artist, michael strevens uses his mobile devices and photo editing applications to create his immersive instagram photo series. high in contrast, whether in bright neon colors or grayscale, streven’s abstract images engage the viewers with its play on pattern and perspective. the artist takes inspiration from glitch art and enjoys the idea of ‘digitally destroying or corrupting the data in an image and turning it into something new.’

for every instagram post, michael strevens methodically places a human figure, in movement, along the pattern to provide a sense of ground and scale. depending on the form of the pattern, the small figure can be found in different placements and sizes; sometimes, the search is not too easy and can turn into an interactive game for the viewers. many of the patterns feature either one focal vanishing point with geometric lines or an abstract texture.

‘[the figure] allows you as the viewer to locate yourself in the image and turns the abstract pattern into a ‘place’ of sorts.’ explains strevens.

strevens first found his obsession for mobile photography back in 2012, when he purchased his first iphone and discovered instagram. after exploring different genres of photography including architecture and urban landscaping throughout europe, strevens have developed to enjoy editing his images more. today, strevens uses a wide range of applications in both apple and android stores, and continues to experiment with his style that captures the combination of graphic patterns and extreme depth.
