Michael Werner Gallery opens in athens with Accrochage
Michael Werner Gallery expands its global presence with a new space in Athens, Greece. Adding to its locations in Berlin, New York, London, and Los Angeles, which is set to open later this June, the gallery celebrates its Greek opening with an inaugural group show titled Accrochage. The exhibition brings together works by gallery artists including Georg Baselitz, Sigmar Polke, Issy Wood and more, in an eclectic space in the center of Athens, thoughtfully renovated by local creative firm Mare Studio.

MARE STUDIO RENOVATES THE GALLERY’S INTERIORS
Michael Werner Athens, led by former art advisor Maximos Stergiou, will host two exhibitions a year and be open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday. Situated on Leoforos Vasileos Georgiou 10, near the Presidential Palace in the city’s central Anáktora neighborhood, the first-floor gallery space gets a fresh look courtesy of Mareva Grabowski’s Mare Studio. Mid-century and vintage finds blend seamlessly with custom-built furniture in a subtle, eclectic interior that lets the artworks do the talking. Crisp white walls set the stage for the welcome area, three exhibition spaces, and a private viewing room, enlivened by pops of color like the burnt orange velvet wall niches and the green paneling of the office. A curated selection of design pieces can be found throughout, including Murano glass lamps by Gae Aulenti, pendants by Gino Sarfatti and Gio Ponti, a Carlo Scarpa desk, and a custom marble coffee table by Mare Studio.
Michael Werner Gallery Athens opened to the public on May 31st, 2024, with Accrochage, which will remain on view throughout the summer. Participating artists include: Hurvin Anderson, Jean Arp, Georg Baselitz, James Lee Byars, Aaron Curry, Enrico David, Jörg Immendorff, Sanya Kantarovsky, Per Kirkeby, Florian Krewer, Eugène Leroy, Markus Lüpertz, Maki Na Kamura, A.R. Penck, Francis Picabia, Sigmar Polke, Andy Robert, Peter Saul, Raphaela Simon, and Issy Wood.
