Cheng Tsung FENG Translates Plant Morphology into Structure

Part of Cheng Tsung FENG’s Structural Botany series, the work titled 25AP-263-43 examines plant morphology through the lens of modular construction. The series draws from the formal language of botanical structures, abstracting characteristics such as growth pattern, stem geometry, and leaf arrangement into spatial compositions made with artificial materials.

Located at Swiio Villa Yilan in Zhuangwei, Taiwan, the installation references a vertical growth habit, with elements reaching between 2.5 and 5 meters in height. Units are evenly spaced, creating a clustered formation that evokes the rhythm of a plant colony.

Structural Botany Reimagines Plant Forms as Spatial Systems

Structural components mimic upright, quadrangular stems with smooth brown surfaces and a central white longitudinal stripe. These elements occasionally branch at the apex, while the base features raised, rounded nodes and consistent internode spacing.

Leaf-like modules appear as singular terminal elements atop each stem. They are positioned irregularly and tilt slightly upward. Each blade measures approximately 1.5 meters in diameter, circular in shape, thin, and semi-translucent, forming a layered canopy across the structure. Artist Cheng Tsung FENG’s design maintains a clear relationship between repetition, scale, and botanical reference, emphasizing the intersection of natural systems and human-engineered form.
