Graphic patterns and bright colors shape Chasing Sunbeams

Chasing Sunbeams, a large-scale installation by UK artist Morag Myerscough, is on view in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, through November 23rd, 2025. Known for her work in public environments such as the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, Coachella in Palm Springs, Battersea Power Station in London, and NDSM in Amsterdam, Myerscough brings her approach to regional Australia for the first time.

The installation is conceived as an environment shaped by local input and responses to the natural setting. Developed through community workshops, the project incorporates patterns, colors, and narratives gathered from Ballarat residents. The resulting structure forms an immersive spatial composition in which graphic elements, handcrafted components, and layered surfaces define the visitor experience. Myerscough aimed to use materials that are either sustainable or recyclable where possible.

soundscapes are embedded in Morag Myerscough’s installation

Sound plays a central role in the installation, created by artist Morag Myerscough. Recordings from approximately 40 local participants, ranging in age from three to seventy-five, were integrated into an audio composition by sound designer and musician Raul Sanchez. The soundscape combines musical tones, field recordings, and individual spoken words collected during the workshops. These elements are arranged to form a shifting acoustic environment that changes continuously as it moves through the space. Chasing Sunbeams marks the inaugural commission for Sunnyside, Ballarat’s new large-scale art program, presented from November 6th – November 23rd, 2025.
