stephen smith of neasden control center is a UK-based illustrator that works across a variety of projects and commissions. recently, vital arts and the barts health NHS trust employed the artist to create a large scale illustration in the dental ward of the ‘royal london hospital’ at whitechapel. the work features a mix of large prints in tandem with illustrated figures, animals, birds, forests, and urban architecture.

an illustrated column amidst a sea of work stations
meant to appeal to both young children and teenagers, pieces are located everywhere from the waiting room to the dental chair — all positioned to relax patients who have found themselves in the office. special care was taken to blend the color scheme into the facility’s existing palette which includes furniture and other equipments. the resulting artwork(s) create a harmonious balance between art and hospital architecture.
