is a reversible alteration in consciousness producing a state similar to alcohol intoxication in scuba divers. katie grinnan’s sculpture ‘nitrogen narcosis’ is a spindly totem made of bamboo, laminated particle board and resin-soaked swaths of canvas that she has cut and folded to resemble the fronds of fan palms. complete with photo-collage backdrop, it has the presence of a miniature windmill in its post-apocalyptic menace, but tempered by its nutty joyousness. grinnan’s work is on view in a group exhibition organized by painter kristin calabrese

at honor fraser in venice, california, through september 27.
