OSGEMEOS animate times square at midnight with quirky figures + faces

from now until august 31, 2015, visitors to new york’s bustling times square can see the work of brazilian artist duo OSGEMEOS projected on huge synchronized screens surrounding them. from 11:57 pm to midnight each evening throughout the month of august, the brothers’ iconic animated characters come to life for the new work entitled ‘parallel connection’. presented by the times square advertising coalition and times square arts, the ‘midnight moment’ sets interested onlookers, pedestrians and passers-by at the barrier between imagination and reality, where colorful figures and faces stare out at the crowds in seeming recognition of their presence.

taking over much of the screen space that occupies the wildly luminous few blocks, the quirky characters interact with the site and surrounding architecture, bursting from the depths of the displays and smiling at enthusiastic passers-by. ‘we are very happy to try new media, because it was always exciting.’ OSGEMEOS say. ‘this is the first time that we created something of this scale, using screens and a longer animation. it is a dialogue between two worlds, where the viewer is in the middle of the stage, and establishes a conversation between the imaginary and the real world, a break in time to reflect and daydream.’
