it was just over a year ago that artist charles young amused and amazed us with his meticulously-crafted miniature paper metropolis. since then, ‘paperholm’ has expanded into a city of more than 600 handmade scale models, architectural arrangements, fictional dwellings, and conceptual infrastructural elements. each day, young designs, crafts, photographs, and deftly animates new objects into whimsical and dynamic facets of the miniature metropolitan landscape.

the ‘paperholm‘ project is exhibited for the first time at dundee contemporary arts in scotland starting tomorrow, through november 26th, 2016 as part of the NEoN digital arts festival. the expansion of the city, first spotted by colossal, sees each of the models and freestanding constructions made with watercolor paper, which has been folded, creased, cut and secured using PVA glue. young’s use of these simple mediums and methods allows for quick construction, as well as a deeper study into the different facets of architectural elements. simple stop-motion animation techniques activate the cars, carousels, buildings, and buses in the scene, adding a whimsical sensibility to the ever-expanding project.
