PHILIPPE KATERINE’S LIGHT-HEARTED AND IRREVERENT EXHIBITION AT LE BON MARCHÉ

french musician, composer and artist, philippe katerine, presents le mignonisme (cute-ism) at paris’ le bon marché. both light-hearted and irreverent, the exhibition discloses the artist’s philosophy of ‘simply open your eyes: you can always find something cute somewhere, it’s just a matter of perception.’

set along the central atrium of the renowned parisian department store, the show expands into the exhibition space on the second floor, and in the windows located on rue de sèvres.

A WORK OF ART PRODUCED DURING LOCKDOWN

an extravagant and unorthodox artist with a corrosive sense of humor, philippe katerine used lockdown to produce a multi-form work of art. the result is le mignonisme, a diagnostic tool that looks into revealing the ‘cute’ aspect of the experimental situation the whole world is going through. the artist draws, paints, dreams and invents universes where objects, food, animals and nature come to life and challenge reality.

at the atrium, monsieur rose (mr pink) — a massive pink character — explores le bon marché and chats with his high-flying friends perched on the store’s architecture. full of humor and creativity, the artist’s iconic giant bubble-gum pink sculptures exert a gentle pull on those who cross their path.

at the exhibition space, nothing is off limits for philippe katerine, who glamorizes everyday objects through his paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs. with the show, the artist wants to remind visitors that the unexpected and creativity can be hidden away anywhere, and that if we look closely, we can always find something cute somewhere.

the space hosts an array of works produced by katerine, available to buy, as well as a collection of clothing and mignoniste (cute-ist) goodies born from mockery and pop aesthetics.
