French artist and designer Pierre Brault presents his latest color experimentation project titled POP SUNDIAL. Taking over buildings in city streets, he recreates three spellbinding variations of sundials to mark the natural rhythm and time of day at every hour. As the sun progresses in its position, the installations begin projecting mesmerizing and multicolored patterns, intended as ‘an invitation to appreciate the present moment,’ Brault writes.

Moreover, the artist reinterprets latin mottos for this project, assigning them as titles for each sundial variation: SOL REGIT OMNIA (the sun rules over everything), DO SI SOL (I give if the sun gives), and SINE MOTU CURRO (immobile, however I run).

using light and colors as meditative layers

Through POP SUNDIAL, the artist is able to pursue his artistic process using natural light and colors, inviting passersby and digital audiences alike ‘to slow down, to raise [their] eyes to the sky and to contemplate the colored shadows on the walls of the city.’ The images below offer an intimate behind-the-scene look at the project, depicting the artist at his studio, studying and re-imagining sundial patterns, color schemes, and mottos.

In recent years, luxury and fashion brands have been fascinated by Brault’s pop and contemporary universe; he ultimately signed collaborations with La Prairie, Zadig & Voltaire, LaDurée, Cartier, Vans, and American Vintage, among others. His works of art have also recently entered renowned private contemporary art and corporate collections; since 2022, he has been represented by Galeries Bartoux, rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré, in Paris.
