the collaborative team of RAAAF and atelier de lyon has been selected to realize one of the netherlands’ largest monuments. with a completion date currently scheduled for 2018, the giant art commission is a tribute to the delta works — a series of dams, dykes, and storm surge barriers in the southwest of the country that protect large swathes of land from the sea.

titled ‘deltawerk 1:1’, the project forms part of ‘hardcore heritage’, a manifesto laid out by RAAAF and atelier de lyon that explores new ways of thinking about monuments and their purpose. ‘through deliberate destruction, radical changes in context, and seemingly contradictory additions, a new field of tension arises between present, past and future,’ explains RAAAF. previous works in the series include ‘after image’, and ‘bunker 599’ a project previously featured on designboom here.

‘deltawerk 1:1’ will be sited at waterloopbos — a former hydrodynamics laboratory where a number of models were once used to test the strength of the planned engineering works. the project focuses its attention on the delta flume, which once produced massive waves on a 1:1 scale, but now lies unused.
the work will form a gigantic ‘delta work’, 7 meters high and 250 meters long
by excavating the sand plateau around the underground flume, a gigantic ‘delta work’ — 7 meters high and 250 meters long — will be unveiled, surrounded by water. enormous concrete slabs will be cut out of the 80cm-thick walls and lifted 90 degrees on their axis. it is imagined that the monument will be colonized by nature, creating a landmark that constantly changes over time.
