since 2012, random international’s ‘rain room’ — has drenched the los angeles county museum of art, the yuz in shanghai, the MoMA in new york, and london’s barbican centre. as a traveling installation, its reign always comes to an end. but today, the collection of recycled-raindrops has found a permanent place to fall. sharjah art foundation in al majarrah park will forever house the random international rain room.

in this room, perpetual rainfall pauses and resumes, wherever and whenever a person moves. vulnerably exposed, soaked, then still, then loud, then quiet, then dripping — visitors are cycled through moments. random international — the london-based collective behind these moments — use recycled, carefully-tested and treated water to create the never ending illusion.

self-cleaning filters make it possible to continuously reuse the water. in fact, a ‘relatively small amount of water’ is needed to create this dreamy effect. rain room’s new permanent location in al majarrah park will expand sharjah art foundation’s commitment to the local community.
