red wound and black stitches turn bulldozer scar into land art by the krank in corfu
wound frames the altered landscape between past intervention and an unresolved environmental future.
red incision marks physical scars of land intervention in Erimitis
In Erimitis, one of the last major undeveloped coastal ecosystems in northeastern Corfu, Greece, artist The Krank has created Wound, a temporary 50-meter-long land art installation. Presented fourteen years after the movement to protect the area began, the work uses the image of a bodily injury to address the marks left by human intervention on the landscape.
An oversized red incision appears to split the land open, while black stitches connect its two sides. The gesture translates bodily trauma to the scale of the landscape, making the vulnerability of the site visible through a familiar physical image. Members of the local community and the Save Erimitis initiative helped create and position the stitches, turning the act of stitching into a collective gesture connected to the long-running effort to protect the area.
The stitches do not remove the wound but hold its two sides together, suggesting the possibility of healing. The work was installed on a section of Erimitis where bulldozers had already passed during works associated with an earlier development plan, placing its symbolic image of injury directly over a physical trace of intervention.

Wound marks Erimitis between altered past and uncertain future
The dispute over Erimitis began in 2012, when the site entered a state-led development process. The subsequent Kassiopi Project proposed a five-star hotel, up to 40 villas, and a 57-berth marina within the ecosystem, leading to years of environmental concern, legal action, and local mobilization. Construction began in 2021, but the original plan was never completed. The land is now controlled by a new investment group, while no complete and binding new master plan has been made public.
Wound by land artist The Krank, therefore, occupies an interim moment between past intervention and an unresolved future. Its red incision and black stitches frame the landscape as a site that has been physically altered but remains open to further change, while the collective making process connects the artwork to the ongoing efforts to protect Erimitis.

traces of the bulldozer remained visible, while the campaign to protect Erimitis had built a strong public presence. Both shaped the incision and stitches at the core of the artwork
