illuminating Arc ZERO: Eclipse frames views of Han River in Seoul

Arc ZERO: Eclipse is a site-specific installation by Studio JT, led by designer James Tapscott, standing along Han River in Seoul. The work consists of a semi-circular structure integrated into an infinity-edge reflecting pool, forming a complete circular visual through its reflection. The piece engages with natural elements, mist, water, and light, to create a perceptual spatial experience.

This version of Arc ZERO is an evolution of earlier installations, notably ‘Nimbus’ (2017, Japan), which incorporated immersive configurations surrounding existing infrastructure such as bridges. In contrast, Eclipse emphasizes visual framing and reflection, aligning with the site’s function as a rooftop garden within a mixed-use development in Godeok, Seoul. Its placement is selected to frame a prominent view of the Han River and a nearby bridge, while also remaining visible from a distance, including moving vehicles on adjacent roadways.

Studio JT utilizes minimal technology and natural elements

For the fabrication, designer James Tapscott and Studio JT create a bespoke diamond-profile ring structure, which minimizes surface reflections of the viewer and enhances optical immersion. The material composition includes components designed for precision water dispersion, producing a continuous mist that interacts with both natural and artificial light sources. The result is a dynamic oculus that shifts in appearance throughout the day and night. The installation operates within a minimal technological framework, relying primarily on elemental materials and physical principles rather than digital emulation. This approach enables the work to integrate environmental conditions as a core part of its function, rather than relying on augmented effects.

Arc ZERO: Eclipse continues a series of similar works installed internationally, including a permanent installation in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, which received recognition through the 2023 CODA award for landscape art. Local production and installation for the Seoul version were managed in collaboration with The Ton.
