in light of recent events surrounding the defacing of mark rothko’s work ‘maroon on black’ at the tate modern in london, brooklyn-based photographer henry hargreaves and stylist caitlin levin have sent designboom images of their reinterpretations of the famed artist’s work in rice. the duo have a keen interest in experimenting with the medium of food – the vandalism incident proving there to be a  greater link to food and rothko’s artwork than expected. in 1958, rothko was commissioned to paint an installation for the new four seasons restaurant in NY. at this time the four seasons  was considered the best in dining in NY and the request was a strange commission for him to accept as he despised the showy identity the restaurant was hoping to generate for itself.

rothko claimed he:’ tried to create something that will ruin the appetite of every son-of-a-bitch who ever eats in that room. if the restaurant would refuse to put up my murals, that would be the ultimate compliment. but they won’t. people can stand anything these days.’ after completing 40 works he went back on the offer returned the money and the series is now split between the tate in london, national gallery in washington, DC and the kawamura memorial museum in japan.

  • I generally enjoy the diversity of Designboom. But, this is the lamest project that they have published. Is it profound, innovative, funny? Is it design or art? I didn\’t like the original image but came to this page to read about the \”concept.\” Originally commissioned for the Four Seasons – therefore let\’s reinterpret the works out of rice??? Wow!!!!
