based on a fleeting conversation around the life of working as a creative, senan lee and pansy aung from salt ‘n’ pepper squid decided to visualize these feelings in the form of a physical sculpture. made from recycled cardboard, ‘the diving bell’ is the pair’s first piece of artwork. the over-sized head piece not only references to the physiological pressure of coming up with ideas on demand, but also the weight of pressure people put on themselves to do so. donning the light-weight sculpture helps to give a sense of ease to what can be a foreboding experience. slats were designed to allow the outside world an intimate view into this secretive space, whilst also emphasizing the need for creatives to absorb as much as possible.
‘for anyone who comes up with ideas on a daily basis, the act of putting on your own ‘diving bell’ is the time you use to discover, search and generate them. its windows are your visual eyes to the world. the little air space is where you have to think – your lifeline to survival.’ says the designers.
