amongst the vast, icy expanse that makes up the finnish lapland, humans are tiny. surrounded by the arctic abyss, finnish photographer tiina törmänen set out to document a sequence of self-portraits to comprise the series she’s titled ‘wanderer’. unlike the close-up, forward-facing shots typical to photographic portraiture, törmänen captured herself amongst the dramatic, surrounding landscape. ‘we are such a small part of this universe’, she writes.

törmänen’s shadowy silhouette somewhere in the distance is dominated by colorful night skies that serve as each image’s backdrop. pierced by a glittering gathering of bright white stars, the northern lights blanket the photographs in a dreamy, surreal gradient of saturated hues. rather than a strict interpretation of portraiture, törmänen instead focuses on the relationship between the human subject and their surrounding environment — for ‘wanderer’, immersed by a sky populated by stars, and isolated on earth as a singular entity.
